News just in that the UK is under 'intense pressure' from the German government to pledge billions of pounds of British taxpayers’ money to a fresh European Union bailout of Greece. Senior figures in the German government are pressing for contributions to the bailout package from all 27 EU nations rather than just the 17 in the euro currency system.

The German demands came as Dutch central bank governor Nout Wellink called for a doubling of EU’s emergency bailout funds. He said £1.3trillion should be made available to stop the “contagion effects” of debt crises spreading across the continent.

The answer, of course, is very simple. We're not in the Euro, so just bugger off and sort out your own mess! It's nothing to do with us.

A spokesman for David Cameron said: “I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment on another nation’s finances but I would point out that the agreement in place does not include the UK.”

Brussels sources, however, said Britain could be forced into contributing if the issue came to a vote within the EU. Any final decision would be taken under the EU’s qualified majority voting system, so it could not be blocked by Britain.
