A while back I got friendly with one of the expedition team who gave me a list of bloody silly questions that he has been asked while on an expedition to the Arctic and Antarctic. Here's just a few...

• Are any icebergs volcanic?
• Are Nautical Miles like Air Miles, and can you collect them too?
• Are seal pups borne alive?
• Are the crosses in the cemetery really for the whales that died here?
• Are the days longer in summer because they expand when it is warmer?
• Are the whales dead when they are hauled into the whaling station?
• Are there any Eskimo left in the Antarctic?
• Are there any hump-back whales with two humps?
• Are there any more undiscovered islands? 
• Are there ever tundra fires under the permafrost?
• Are there many Eskimo left in the Antarctic?
• Are these Adelaide penguins?
• Are these balsamic lavas?
• Are these spaghetti penguins?
• Are these Stradivarius clouds?
• Are those addled penguins?
• Are those centimetres a venomous sort?
• Are those crevasses man-made?
• Are you sure those are petrels; they look like ducks to me?
• At what latitude do seals turn into walruses?
• At what time will the glacier calve next?
• At what time will we be able to see the midnight sun?
• Can birds nest on the sea?
• Can Emperor Penguins really make nests from ice?
• Can penguins lick their lips?
• Can penguins walk backwards?
• Can you identify whales by sight?
• Can you tell me if that one is the last iceberg we will be seeing?
• Did Captain Scott die on his first or second expedition?
• Did Captain Scott ever consider taking camels to the Antarctic?
• Did Franklin write a book about his last expedition?
• Did Shackleton have any ancestors?
• Did that house ruin ever have a roof to keep the snow out?
• Did that yacht cross the ocean to get to the Antarctic?
• Did the Eskimo kill off all the Arctic penguins?
• Did the Eskimos ever patent the kayak?
• Did they really bring all those supplies here or did they buy some locally?
• Did those seals swim to that ice floe where they are sleeping?
• Do albatross parents die after they finish raising a chick?
• Do albatrosses fly while they are sleeping?
• Do Brown Bears molt into Polar Bears for winter?
• Do Fur Seals lay eggs?
• Do Ivory Gulls build their nests on the icebergs?
• Do King Penguins have Queen Penguins for mates?
• Do penguins also have blow holes?
• Do penguins bury their dead?
• Do penguins go out in this sort of weather?

Oh! And if you're wondering about the picture, they have to move the pole marker at the North Pole every so often because it's on drifiting ice
